Product Description:
The 1 oz Gold Eagle is one of the most widely recognized gold coins worldwide. Backed by the United States government and featuring one of the most celebrated designs in American numismatics, this coin offers beauty, reliability, and long-term liquidity.
The American Eagle bullion program launched in 1986 and introduced U.S. investors to a new era of government-backed gold bullion. The Mint issues a fresh date every year in January, keeping the series current and easy to collect.
Obverse Design
The obverse uses Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ iconic 1907 Liberty design from the $20 Double Eagle—considered one of the most beautiful coin designs in U.S. history.
Lady Liberty stands confidently with:
- A torch in her right hand
- An olive branch in her left
- The Capitol building in the lower left
- Radiating sun rays in the background
- The inscription “LIBERTY” above
Reverse Design
The coin has two possible reverse designs depending on year:
- Type 1 (1986–2021): A male eagle carrying an olive branch above a nest with a female eagle and eaglets. Designed by Miley Busiek Frost and sculpted by Sherl J. Winter.
- Type 2 (2021–present): A highly detailed close-up portrait of a bald eagle. Designed by Jennie Norris and sculpted by Renata Gordon, with enhanced security features.
22k Gold Composition
Gold Eagles are minted in 22k gold (.9167 fine) with small amounts of silver and copper added for durability.
Important note:
The coin still contains exactly 1 troy ounce of pure gold, with additional metal increasing total weight slightly above 1 oz.
Because of the 22k alloy, some investors compare Gold Eagles with .999 or .9999 fine alternatives when looking for maximum gold weight per dollar. However, Eagles remain unmatched in resale strength within the U.S. market.
Coin Highlights:
- 1 oz of 22k gold.
- Legal tender with $50 face value.
- Iconic Liberty and eagle design.
