Product Description:
The Pre-1933 $20 Liberty Gold Double Eagle is one of the most iconic and historically meaningful U.S. gold coins ever produced. Struck from 1850–1907, each coin contains .9675 oz of gold and is made from a durable 90% gold alloy. Today, surviving examples are prized not only for their precious metal content, but also for their rarity and connection to U.S. monetary history.
Pre-1933 Gold: A Legacy Preserved
In 1933, during the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued an executive order requiring citizens to turn in their gold coins to the U.S. Treasury. Millions of gold coins—once common in daily commerce—were melted into bars, drastically reducing the surviving population.
Because of this mass melting, all pre-1933 U.S. gold coins are now considered historic collectibles. Their scarcity, age, and survival story add significant value beyond gold content.
Design Evolution of the $20 Liberty Double Eagle
The Liberty Double Eagle experienced a few design modifications during its run:
- Type I (1850–1866): No “In God We Trust”
- Type II (1866–1876): Motto added after the Civil War
- Type III (1877–1907): Denomination updated from “TWENTY D.” to “TWENTY DOLLARS”
Collectors often seek specific types or mintmarks, adding depth and desirability to the series.
Pre-1933 Gold Coins
Before the 1933 recall ended gold coin circulation, the U.S. Mint produced a full range of gold coinage—from tiny Gold Dollars to the substantial $20 Double Eagle. Most were eventually melted, making survivors highly collectible. Many Double Eagles remained stored in vaults, allowing surprisingly high-grade coins to exist even today.
